Christmas tree farm guide
Christmas tree farms in Maine.
From Wells and Raymond to Fryeburg, Hope and the Penobscot valley, these 17 Maine farm guides explain which trees each farm grows, whether it posts a price, what it handles for you and how short its season can be. Balsam fir leads, every farm cuts in the field and twelve also sell pre-cut trees.
Pick a region and a tree
Raymond, Cape Elizabeth, Scarborough, Wells, North Berwick and Dayton cover the Portland area and southern Maine, and Fryeburg sits against the New Hampshire border. Bath and Hope are on the midcoast, Readfield, South China, Norridgewock and Cornville in the Kennebec and Somerset hills, and Winterport, Levant and two farms in Newburgh in the Penobscot valley. Balsam fir is the Maine standard; Balsam Ridge, Weston’s, Nutkin Knoll and Ledge Hill add Fraser fir, Quinn’s grows hybrid firs, Winterport grows Weir Blue Balsam and Boiling Spring offers blue spruce on request.
Compare the whole price
Eight farms post a current price. Balsam Ridge charges $82 through 8 feet, Beech Ridge $85.31 for any size, Hummer $70 or $90 for premium trees and Quinn’s $60 up to 8 feet plus $8 a foot. Old Farm sells four tagged sizes from $40 to $146 tax included, Ledge Hill starts at $55 and Balsam Hill runs $45 to $67 by height and appearance; Great Works charges $90 for a standard tree and less for apartment sizes. Treworgy shows only last season’s $51 to $99 list, and eight farms publish no tree price this season: Weston’s, Crooked Brook, Trees To Please, Ben and Molly’s, Winterport, Piper Mountain, Nutkin Knoll and Boiling Spring. Payment varies too, from cash or check only at Balsam Hill to no cards at Ledge Hill.
Ask what the farm handles
Quinn’s, Winterport, Piper Mountain and Ledge Hill shake, bale or wrap your tree free, Nutkin Knoll and Boiling Spring net it at no charge, and Trees To Please and Treworgy provide saws and baling. Hummer lends a saw, tarp and measuring stick, while Beech Ridge asks you to bring your own saw, a tarp and a knee cushion. Winterport, Treworgy and Ledge Hill hold wreath or greenery classes, and several farms add a gift shop, a maple sugarhouse or a warming fire.
Time the short season
Beech Ridge and Hummer sell over a single weekend, Ben and Molly’s opens on three weekends, and Balsam Ridge, Weston’s and Piper Mountain open on November 21. Most others start the day after Thanksgiving or that weekend, Old Farm tags trees from November 13 and cuts from November 21, and Great Works books one-hour slots from October 31. Several farms post no closing date and Treworgy has not posted this season’s tree dates, so check each calendar before a long drive.
