Find your tree
Choose your Christmas tree.
Ledge Hill sells balsam fir and Fraser fir, choose and cut in its hilltop field. Look for the lot signs to find the balsams and the Frasers. Balsam is the native tree with the strongest scent and soft, flat, dark-green needles on lighter branches; Fraser has sturdy, stiff branches and silver-underside needles that hold well. Every tree has a price tag, set by variety and size, and choose-and-cut starts at $55.
Hand saws are provided, or you can bring your own hand saw; no powered saws of any kind are allowed, because of the farm’s insurance. Bring a sled if there is snow. Trimming and wrapping are free. Maine-grown pre-cut trees stand ready by the barn if you would rather pick and go, starting at $45. The farm keeps a small selection of trees of 10 feet and taller; call to check what is left.

A visit, step by step
The farm describes four steps, about an hour: park near the barn, walk the field and choose, have your tree trimmed and wrapped, then warm up with free hot chocolate and cookies, Adirondack chairs by the fire and a look through the farm shop.
Follow the hand-painted Ledge Hill Farm sign and park on the road near the barn. Someone will be there to greet you and hand you a saw. On a clear day the top of the field has a view of Mount Washington and the Western Maine mountains. The farm says there is room for children to run, and a sled is welcome if there is snow.

Wreaths, swags, kissing balls and greenery
The farm makes wreaths, swags, baskets and kissing balls by hand from its own balsam, with pine cones and hand-tied bows, and makes them fresh every weekend. The prices below are the starting prices the farm publishes; the full list of greenery prices is posted in the farm shop, and custom wreaths are priced by size and trim.
| Item | Price |
|---|---|
| Traditional door wreath, about 20 inches finished | Starting at $30 |
| Larger wreaths, 18, 24, 32 and 36 inch frames | Starting at $40 |
| Kissing balls | $50 |
| Swags, hanging baskets, centerpieces and containers | Starting at $20 |
| Custom wreaths | Priced by size and trim |
Custom orders, pre-orders and window boxes
For a custom wreath, tell the farm your colors and size, such as plaid, velvet, woodland animals, pine cones or berries, and order early for the best choice of ribbon. The farm is taking pre-orders for custom holiday greens, including large wreaths, kissing balls, hanging baskets, containers and centerpieces. It can also fill and decorate window boxes, whiskey barrels or other outdoor containers, at the farm or at your location. Prices and schedule are given when you contact the farm, and no service area is published.
Greenery workshops
The farm hosts evening workshops in its workshop where you make your own wreath or other greenery decoration. It supplies the greens, wire, ribbon, instruction and tools, such as pruners and frames, and you take home what you make. The price per person, materials included, is not published; contact the farm. No dates are published either. Seats are limited because the workbench is only so long, and you can sign up through the contact page, by phone, or by asking at the farm shop.
The farm shop
The farm shop sells Ledge Hill Farm branded goods and birch log reindeer made from wood cut on the property. The farm’s photo gallery shows items such as hand-blown glass ornaments, maple pecan granola, crocheted gnomes, felted sheep, soy wax candles, balsam sachets, pine cone firestarter gift bags, tree print cards and porch pots. Prices for farm-shop goods are not published, and the shop holds the full greenery price list. Dogs are not allowed inside the farm shop or the barn.
Payment, dogs, restrooms and what to wear
The farm takes cash, local checks and Venmo, and does not take credit or debit cards. Well-behaved, family-friendly dogs are welcome on a short leash at all times; pick up after them and do not let a dog pee on the trees. There are no restroom facilities on the farm.
Wear boots and warm layers. The fields are grass, and the hillside can be wet, muddy or snowy depending on the weekend. The farm has not published wheelchair-access details, parking capacity or a weather-closure rule.
Photography at the farm
Families may take their own photos. The farm chooses one photographer each year to hold December shoots at the farm once it opens, and has already chosen its photographer for this season, so other photographers’ sessions are not available.
Caring for your tree
If the tree will sit more than a few hours before it goes in the stand, cut a thin slice from the base. Fill the stand right away, check it daily, and keep the tree away from heaters and wood stoves.
Finding the farm and its family
The farm is at 34 Plains Road in Readfield, on 15 acres at the top of a hill. The Clauson family started growing trees there on third-generation family land, and the fourth generation now helps run the farm.
Look for the hand-painted Ledge Hill Farm sign and park on the road near the barn.
