Find your tree
Choose your Christmas tree.
Balsam Ridge grows its trees in 11 fields across 50 acres that were once hardwood forest, with trees up to 9 feet. The farm lists three kinds: balsam fir, the traditional New England favorite known for its Christmas fragrance; Fraser fir, with a beautiful shape, sturdy branches, excellent needle retention and blue-green needles; and a balsam–Fraser hybrid it calls Fralsam, which it describes as combining balsam’s fragrance with Fraser’s shape, color and needle retention.
On arrival you are greeted and given a saw and a tree cart. The farm’s home page lists saws, tree wrapping and carts among what it provides, while its tree page puts wrapping, shaking and drilling on weekends, so ask about weekday wrapping. Cordless reciprocating saws are welcome, but chainsaws are not. You then walk the open fields to choose your tree. Selection changes as trees sell, and the popular varieties and sizes go early.
The $82 price covers any choose-and-cut tree through 8 feet; taller trees in designated fields are priced separately.

Choose-and-cut, step by step
When you arrive you are greeted and handed a saw and a tree cart. Walk the open fields, choose a tree, and cut it yourself; chainsaws of any kind are not allowed, but cordless reciprocating saws are welcome. Bring a truck or SUV, because you secure your own tree for the ride home. The farm asks one person from the party to pay at the gift shop for pre-cut trees and does not say where choose-and-cut trees are paid for, so ask when you arrive.
On weekends the farm has tree wrapping, shaking and drilling available. It does not say whether those services run on weekdays for choose-and-cut trees, or whether they carry a charge. Certain fields may be closed during the season to protect younger trees, so the fields open to you can change from week to week. The farm’s pages do not describe the terrain, parking or restrooms.
Trees and their price
The farm lists three kinds of choose-and-cut tree. All three are $82 each through 8 feet, plus Maine sales tax, whatever the variety or height within that limit.
| Tree | What the farm says | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Balsam fir | A traditional New England favorite, known for wonderful Christmas fragrance. | $82 each through 8 feet, plus Maine sales tax |
| Fraser fir | Beautiful shape, sturdy branches, excellent needle retention and blue-green needles. | $82 each through 8 feet, plus Maine sales tax |
| Balsam–Fraser hybrid (Fralsam) | The farm calls it the best of both varieties: the fragrance of balsam with the shape, color and needle retention of Fraser. | $82 each through 8 feet, plus Maine sales tax |
| Any variety over 8 feet, in designated fields | May be larger than the standard trees. | Priced separately; not published, so ask at the farm |
Pre-cut trees
If you would rather not walk the fields, the farm keeps pre-harvested balsam and Fraser fir in 6- to 8-foot sizes, cut regularly and available while supplies last. The farm’s home page mentions only balsam fir for pre-cut trees. They are tagged and priced by size, species and grade, and the farm has not published those prices, so ask at the farm.
Drilling, shaking and tree wrapping are complimentary for pre-cut trees. Tree netting is available, and the farm suggests bringing a hand saw and rope or twine. The farm’s tree page also gives care advice: pick a fresh tree, store it in water out of sun and wind until you set it up, make a fresh cut about half an inch from the bottom just before putting it in the stand, keep the stand full of water, and keep the tree away from heat sources. Pay at the gift shop; the farm asks that one person from your party pay.
Wreaths, kissing balls and garland
The wreaths and kissing balls are hand-crafted from fresh boughs from the farm. They are for farm pick-up only and are not shipped. Online orders open November 1, allow 3 business days for processing, and the wreaths are also sold in the gift shop. The wreaths are 22 to 24 inches across and weigh about 5 pounds. The farm does not explain the difference between its natural and traditional wreaths.
The farm mentions hand-crafted garlands but lists no garland product, size or price; ask at the farm.

Weekend extras and Santa
On weekends in the Christmas season the farm has a fire pit, hot cocoa, spiced hot cider and a donut or scone. The farm has not published prices for them, so ask at the farm.
Santa arrives on Saturday, November 28, from 10am to 12pm. The farm has not published a price, photo arrangements or booking details for the visit.
Gift shop, sugarhouse and maple products
The farm added its sugarhouse and gift shop to the tree farm, and the shop sells maple cream, candies, maple-coated nuts, barbecue sauces, mustards, holiday candles, gift packs and wreaths. You may be able to watch wreaths being decorated and bows being made. The farm’s Christmas hours list the gift shop as open Saturdays from 10am to 3pm and do not say whether it opens other days in tree season. Dogs are not allowed in the gift shop or sugarhouse.
Maple products are sold year round, shipped or collected at the sugarhouse window. The sugarhouse also holds a Maine Maple Weekend open house in late March, which is separate from the Christmas visit. Trees for Troops is a program in which trees are shipped to Fort Drum; the farm welcomes donations to it.
