Christmas tree farm guide
Christmas tree farms in South Carolina.
From York and Greenville in the north to Okatie and Conway near the coast, these nine South Carolina farm guides explain which trees each farm grows, whether it posts a price, what it handles for you and when its season starts. Cypress, pine and cedar lead the fields, every farm lets you choose and cut, and all nine also sell Fraser fir.
Pick a region and a tree
Penland in York, Merry Christmas in Central and Mystic Farm in Greenville cover the upper part of the state. Hollow Creek and Cedar Ridge in Gilbert, Shine & Lee’s in Newberry and Tom Sawyer’s in Monetta sit in the middle, and A & A in Okatie (Beaufort County) and Booth’s in Conway (Horry County) are near the coast. Leyland cypress grows at all nine farms, Carolina Sapphire and pine (white or Virginia) at eight, and cedar at six. Fraser fir does not grow here: seven of the nine say theirs is trucked in from North Carolina, and Hollow Creek and Shine & Lee’s do not say where it comes from.
Compare the whole price
Six farms post tree prices. Hollow Creek tags every tree, from $58 to $98 at 6 to 8 feet, and Mystic Farm runs from $35 for 3 to 4 feet to $200 at 11 to 12 feet. Penland and Booth’s charge $10 a foot at the shorter sizes, Merry Christmas $11 a foot with nothing cut under 5 feet, and Tom Sawyer’s lists ranges from $60. Booth’s posted prices are still last season’s. Cedar Ridge, Shine & Lee’s and A & A publish no tree price, so ask before you cut.
Ask what the farm handles
Booth’s lists saws, shaking, baling, tie-down, drilling and staff cutting at no extra cost, and Hollow Creek’s crew cuts, shakes, bales and carries your tree to the car, though the farm publishes no fee. Cedar Ridge lumberjacks cut, net and load, Shine & Lee’s shakes, bores and bales, and A & A shakes, bales and ties or loads your tree. Penland and Mystic Farm supply saws, and Mystic adds carts, but Penland, Mystic, Merry Christmas and Tom Sawyer’s publish nothing about shaking or baling. Free hot chocolate, hayrides, Santa and a gift shop turn up at several.
Time the season
Hollow Creek (November 22 to December 16), Mystic Farm and Booth’s (November 21) and Tom Sawyer’s (November 22) open the weekend before Thanksgiving, while Merry Christmas opens on Thanksgiving Day and Penland and A & A the day after. Most publish no closing date. Cedar Ridge and Shine & Lee’s have posted no dates for this season, only last season’s schedule, so call before a long drive.
