Find your tree

Choose your Christmas tree.

Penland grows six varieties for choose-and-cut: Leyland Cypress, Christmas Mint Cypress, Virginia Pine (which the farm calls Southern Scotch), Carolina Sapphire, Red Cedar (its native Southern Christmas tree) and Blue Ice. You walk the field, pick your tree and cut it with a saw the farm provides. The farm lists tree stands as available and children’s trees as an option, with no size or price published for either.

Fraser fir does not grow in South Carolina, so the farm brings its Fraser in pre-cut from the North Carolina mountains, cut fresh and set in water as soon as it arrives. The farm does not publish terrain, parking, restroom or accessibility details, or whether it shakes, bales or helps load trees, so ask when you arrive.

Choose-and-cut trees and tools

Choose-and-cut is the heart of a visit to Penland. The farm lists six varieties it grows, and its pages mark Red Cedar as the native Southern Christmas tree and Virginia Pine as Southern Scotch. It provides saws, lists tree stands as available, and offers children’s trees; it gives no price or size for stands or children’s trees.

The farm describes itself as pet friendly. It does not publish where to park, what the ground is like, or whether anyone helps carry or load a tree.

Tree prices by height

The farm publishes two price lists. Leyland Cypress and Christmas Mint Cypress share one list; Virginia Pine, Carolina Sapphire, Red Cedar and Blue Ice share another. The figures below are the farm’s own. The Leyland and Mint list jumps from the 5 ft–6 ft price to 8 ft and gives no price for 7 ft, so ask what a 7 ft tree costs.

Trees that are 12 ft and taller on the Leyland and Mint list are priced individually. The shorter list stops at 9 ft.

Pre-cut Fraser fir

Penland sells pre-cut Fraser fir at $85 and up. The farm explains that it cannot grow Fraser fir in South Carolina, so these trees are shipped in from the North Carolina mountains, cut fresh, and placed in water immediately on arrival.

The farm does not publish Fraser sizes or delivery dates, so ask what is on the lot. These are shipped-in trees, separate from the choose-and-cut varieties grown on the farm.

Free hayrides, hot chocolate and marshmallows

The farm’s home page lists free hayrides and free hot chocolate, and lists roasting marshmallows alongside them with no separate price. The farm does not give days or times for the hayrides, so confirm when you plan to go.

The farm does not say whether the marshmallows are supplied or how long the hayrides run.

Mulch Mountain, Treasure Barn, Snack Shack and wreaths

The home page also lists Mulch Mountain, the Treasure Barn and a Snack Shack. It does not describe Mulch Mountain or the Treasure Barn, says nothing about whether either is free, and publishes no Snack Shack menu or prices. Wreaths and bows are also listed, without sizes, designs or prices.

Payment, pets and what to bring

The farm accepts cash and cards, listing payment as “Cash & Card (3% fee),” and an ATM is available on site. It lists itself as pet friendly and provides saws, so you do not need to bring your own.

Not published: parking, terrain, restrooms, accessibility, help loading or baling trees, a weather rule, and prices for stands, wreaths, children’s trees and Snack Shack items. For anything that matters to your visit, ask before you drive.

The Penland family and the separate landscape nursery

The farm calls itself a family tradition since 1966. Steve Penland planted the first trees that year and began selling in 1972; his daughter Allison and her husband Martin, with their children, now run the Christmas tree farm.

Steve and Judy Penland keep a small landscape-tree nursery of ball-and-burlap trees. That is a separate operation from the Christmas tree farm.
