Christmas tree farm guide
Christmas tree farms in California.
From the Sierra foothills and Apple Hill to the Santa Cruz Mountains, the San Joaquin Valley and Southern California, these 16 California farm guides explain which trees each farm grows, how it prices them, what it handles for you and how short its season runs.
Pick a region and a tree
The Sierra foothill farms around Grass Valley, Foresthill and Apple Hill grow mainly white, silvertip and Douglas firs. Santa Cruz Mountains and coastside farms mix firs with Monterey pine, redwood, cedar and cypress. From San Martin and Reedley south to El Cajon, the fields lean to Monterey pine, and most of those farms add pre-cut firs shipped in from Oregon or the Pacific Northwest.
Compare the whole price
Three farms post one price for any size, from Hillcrest’s $85 Monterey pines to McGee’s $145 cash price; Snowy Peaks charges by the foot, and McBurney, Crest Ranch and Family Christmas Tree Farm price by height or tree type. Seven farms publish no tree price and Patchen none for its field trees, while Santa’s posts its one field price as the season opens; each guide says what is and is not posted. Read the tax and payment notes too: some farms add a charge for cards, and one takes cards only.
Ask what the farm handles
McBurney, Crest Ranch and Four Winds lend saws and include netting, and Farmakis nets, ties and loads your tree at no extra charge. Elsewhere shaking and netting cost about $5 to $7 each, and flocking runs from $10 a foot to unpriced custom work. Patchen, Santa’s, Greenspot, Family Christmas Tree Farm and Farmakis also deliver, on terms the guides keep apart from the field visit.
Time the short season
McGee sells only over Thanksgiving weekend, Crest Ranch from the weekend before through Thanksgiving weekend with limited fields one December weekend, and Madrone opens in December and sells until its supply runs out. McBurney stays open to Christmas Eve and Four Winds to Christmas Day, several farms close a few days before Christmas, and some post no closing date, so check each calendar before a long drive.
