Four Winds sells every tree at one price, $90 with tax included, whatever the species or height. Trees run up to 16 feet and some are bigger.
The farm lists eight kinds, from most to least common: Douglas fir, white fir, Grand fir, spruce, blue spruce, Silvertip, Noble and sequoia. Trees are mixed throughout the farm, but the higher elevations tend to have more of the non-Douglas-fir varieties and Douglas fir dominates the lower elevations. The farm does not post sizes or availability by species.
You pick up a saw at the checkout booth, walk the farm and cut your own tree, then net it and tie it down, and return the saw and pay at the checkout booth. The farm started as 60 acres of apple and pear orchards converted into one of the first Christmas tree farms in the Santa Cruz Mountains.

How cutting works
Saws are available for pickup at the checkout booth when you come in. Cut the trunk above the lower branches, leaving at least five or six branches the size of your thumb so the tree can regrow. When your tree is secured, return to the checkout booth to return your saw and pay.
Netting and tying down
Netting is free and self-serve at the stations by the picnic area next to the main lot and snack bar. Use the red station for trees up to 8 feet and the green station for larger ones: lay the tree on the table with the stump in the baler, pull it through, and cut the netting with the scissors tied to the baler. Ask at the snack bar if you need help. Free twine is in orange buckets in each parking lot.

Trees and prices
One price covers every tree. The farm lists the eight kinds below from most to least common; its tree-types page shows photos of six of them.
| Tree | Size | Price | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Douglas fir | Up to 16 feet and some bigger | $90 tax included | Most common; dominates the lower elevations |
| White fir, Grand fir, spruce, blue spruce, Silvertip, Noble | Up to 16 feet and some bigger | $90 tax included | More common at the higher elevations |
| Sequoia | Up to 16 feet and some bigger | $90 tax included | Least common of the eight listed |
Weekend refreshments, tamales and greens
On weekends the farm gives out candy canes, firewood while it lasts, and free hot chocolate, apple cider and coffee at the snack bar near the main lot, where snacks and soft drinks are $1 each. Carmen’s Tamales and Salsa sets up on weekends, selling while its tamales and salsa last; no prices are posted. The farm also sells mistletoe and wreaths, without posted prices.
Photographer open house
On Saturday and Sunday, November 14 and 15, from 9am to 5pm, the farm holds a free open house for photographers, with no RSVP required and no restrooms that weekend. The farm does not say whether trees are sold on those days.
Parking, roads and restrooms
Park in the upper main lot, in Lower Lot A to the left, or in Lower Lot B to the right past the main house. Park on the road sides where indicated and leave room for cars to pass. The main lot fills fast on weekends, usually from 11am to 2pm, so go straight to Lower Lot B then. The side roads are slippery in rain, so the farm advises two-wheel-drive cars to avoid wet days and four-wheel-drive drivers to be careful.
Portable toilets are in each parking lot, but there are none after Sunday, December 20. The farm posts no policy on pets, accessibility, group visits or a parking fee.
Finding the farm, payment and contact
The farm is on Skyline Boulevard halfway between Bear Creek and Black Road. From Highway 17, take the Bear Creek and Black Road exit at Lexington Reservoir and turn left at Black Road. In about 1.5 miles turn left at Gist Road, and after about 1.5 miles turn left on Skyline; the farm is a quarter mile on the right.
For day-of questions the farm’s map page says to text Greg at 408-464-2707. For appointments outside the posted hours, email the farm. The home page lists cash, check, Venmo, PayPal and Zelle; the tree-types page says cash or check only.
Maureen Monahan and Greg Lahann bought the farm and made it their home, and guests have made it a family tradition across generations. The ranch dogs are Emmett and Abby. When you get your tree home, the farm says to make a fresh cut an inch from the bottom, water it immediately and keep the water above the bottom of the stump.
