Snow Mountain Ranch is a private-property cutting outing near Granby, separate from national-forest permit areas. Its previously published programme includes a tree ticket for lodging guests and offers a $29 public tree-cutting ticket, with one tree per family. Confirm that the programme is running before travelling. Check in with ranch staff at the Program Building before going into the forest; a U.S. Forest Service permit does not authorize cutting here.
Handsaws are supplied, and you may bring your own hand tools. Chainsaws and electric equipment are prohibited. Staff marks trees that must stay standing; leave those untouched and ask if you are uncertain about a choice. The published ranch guidance also asks cutters to go at least thirty feet off the trail.

| Selection & size | Price |
|---|---|
| Private-ranch tree-cutting ticket | $29 Earlier public ticket price, not a confirmed renewed offer; guest ticket supplied at lodging check-in under the published programme. |

Collect the ticket and prepare the journey home
Lodging guests receive their tree-cutting ticket at check-in under the published programme, with one tree per family included. Other visitors purchase a ranch ticket and also check in at the Program Building. Confirm the renewed cutting dates and daily arrangements rather than treating the resort's general opening hours as tree-cutting hours.
Use the Library parking lot for the outing, and bring suitable winter clothing and your own means of securing the tree. Visitors tie their own trees down. The private-ranch ticket and marked cutting boundaries matter even when neighboring public forest areas are also open for permit cutting.

| Before cutting | Ranch ticket and Program Building check-in |
| Tools | Handsaws supplied or own hand tools; no powered equipment |
| Tree choice | Avoid marked trees; at least thirty feet from trail |
| Parking and transport | Library lot; tie your own tree down |
More holiday time at Snow Mountain Ranch
An earlier Snow Mountain Ranch holiday programme also describes gift-wrap relays, a Polar Express pajama gathering with cocoa and crafts, snow painting, winter science activities, cozy crafts and gingerbread-house building. A guided Moose on the Loose snowshoe hike explores habitat and signs of wildlife rather than promising an animal sighting.
These are scheduled resort activities, so check the ranch's current programme for times, registration, charges and guest or day-visitor access. Estes Park Center's Santa and museum timetable belongs to the YMCA's other property and does not establish activities here.
Choose the right winter access
An overnight stay or YMCA of the Rockies membership includes general day-pass access, while day visitors can buy a pass at the Programs Office or Recreation Center. The published rate is $29 for ages thirteen and up, $14 for ages six to twelve, and free for children five and under. Paid lessons, equipment and craft materials can add charges; these passes do not establish a tree-cutting ticket or free partner activity.
Day-pass users sign up for activities on the same day only. Some activities require reservations, and the general programmes recommend arranging those in advance when your guest access permits it. Check the weekly activity guide and facility hours before planning several stops. Meals, concessionaire services and events explicitly advertised as free and open to the public have their own access rules.
Nordic trails, snowshoes and lessons
The Nordic Center’s main notice gives a November 23 opening, while its hours FAQ still names November 24 for an earlier ski season and daily 8:30am–5pm hours. Confirm the renewed opening and hours directly. The opening notice describes the retail shop opening regardless of snow; trails open only when conditions allow. Skiing, snowshoeing and fat-tire biking use designated trails, so check the grooming report before setting out. Members and overnight guests receive trail access, while rentals are separate. There are no fat-bike rentals listed, and leashed dogs are allowed only on the designated ski and snowshoe trails.
Choose classic or skate skis, or snowshoes for a different pace. Rentals are first come, with no advance ski-rental reservations. Afternoon rates cover 12:30–4:30pm. Ask where to collect snowshoes: the activity guide points to the Nordic Center while the rental page names the Programs Building. Private guided snowshoe walks cost $50 per guide for up to fifteen guests, with rentals extra; free public guided walks appear in the weekly guide. Snowshoeing is listed for ages four and up.
One-hour group ski lessons are listed at 10am and 2:30pm, with up to eight people; private lessons at 9:30am and 1pm take up to eight. A child aged six to twelve must attend with an adult paying for the same lesson. Arrive thirty minutes early if renting. The lesson policy provides refunds at least twenty-four hours before; later cancellations cost the full lesson price, and arriving more than fifteen minutes late without staff agreement can forfeit the lesson.
| Option | Published charge and scope |
|---|---|
| Nordic trail day pass | Ages 13+ $29; 6–12 $14; 5 and under free; included for members/overnight guests |
| Five-visit ski punch card | $120; shareable between family members |
| Adult classic or skate ski rental | $25 full day / $20 afternoon; demo skis $35 full day |
| Child classic skis or child snowshoes | $10 full day / $8 afternoon |
| Adult snowshoes | $25 full day / $20 afternoon |
| Child carrier rental | Chariot $25/$20; Osprey pack $18/$15, full day/afternoon |
| Group ski lesson | $50 adult lesson only; ages 6–12 $50 including pass/rental with paying adult |
| Private ski lesson | $60/person; ages 6–12 $50 including pass/rental with paying adult |
Skating, tubing and indoor family time
Winter tubing and outdoor ice skating depend on snow and weather. Use only ranch-provided tubes; outside tubes and sleds are not permitted, and there is no tow or moving platform back up the tubing hill. The Winter Pavilion supplies child and adult ice skates without a rental charge, usually for the early-December-to-March skating season. Non-lodging visitors need the appropriate day pass.
Indoors, the Kiva Recreation Center has games, sports and roller skating, while the library offers books and games with a key available from the Front Desk or Programs Office. The Craft Shop beside the Programs Building has projects for different ages, with materials priced separately. Archery and indoor climbing require a reserved place and another facilitation fee; ask about adaptive climbing equipment before booking.
Thursday Let It Glow nights run 5–9pm at the indoor Recreation Center through December 31. They are roller-skating events, separate from the outdoor ice rink: free for members and guests, or $5 for nonmembers, paid by card only. Borrow skates or bring skates or blades; gym access depends on availability. Private bookings may interrupt the schedule, so call ahead. Children under twelve need an adult present.
The indoor pool has open-swim times, a lap lane and a dry sauna, with a safety waiver and reservations under the applicable day-pass or lodging access. Pool capacity is 50–80 people including the deck, depending on lifeguard staffing. The dry sauna is for ages thirteen and up. Check the current schedule and staff instructions; photography and video are not permitted inside the pool.
The swimming activity’s rules require children five and under to wear the provided flotation gear and have an adult in the water. Children six to twelve need a lifeguard swim check before entering the water, and every child twelve or under needs an attending adult aged eighteen or older in the building. The general youth policy also requires an adult within arm’s reach in the water for ages zero to seven, with a swim test for ages eight to twelve outside the shallow area. Keep those general requirements alongside the swimming activity’s more specific entry rules.
| Activity | Additional charge or condition |
|---|---|
| Archery | $12/person, 45 minutes, age 6+; winter groups up to 9; reserve |
| Indoor climbing | $12/person, 45 minutes, 40–250lb; up to 12 participants; reserve |
| Craft projects | $1–$75 materials per project, beyond required day-pass or lodging access |
| Let It Glow roller skating | Thursday 5–9pm; $5 nonmembers, card only; free members/guests |
Separately booked partner experiences
Redemption Dog Sled Tours operates at the ranch and sells its two- and four-mile winter rides per sled, with single-rider and adult-plus-child choices. The two-mile option accepts children aged four to eleven under 110lb; the four-mile option starts at age five and is the longer meadow-and-forest outing. The provider sets a 250lb maximum rider weight and specific seat/standing rules; ask about the eleven-year boundary and any access needs before choosing. Cancel or reschedule at least seventy-two hours before for a refund; partner weather cancellation has its own rescheduling/refund terms. Request the actual ride price and availability directly.
Rocky Mountain Stables describes a year-round one-hour ride, a weather-dependent two-hour ride, winter horseback outings and winter sleigh rides with cocoa. Horseback riders must be at least eight and within the 250lb limit. Its current winter offerings are more specific than the resort facility page’s March–October horse-season summary, so confirm the provider’s actual winter dates. Wednesday ten-minute pony rides are listed at $25, 10am–3pm, with children able to sit independently; that recurring listing does not guarantee a Christmas-week session.
Cedar Sauna House is another separately booked service at the Nordic Center. Its own current prices are $28 for a drop-in session or $22 for Grand County locals, with shareable four-visit $100 and eight-visit $175 passes and a $100 monthly membership. Towels are available. Confirm its current session times and holiday opening directly; the resort page carries a different older tariff. None of these partner purchases is included merely because you bought a tree or day pass.
Plan a separate meal stop
Schlessman Commons serves buffet meals year round, with pay-as-you-go prices and published vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free options. Times and prices can change; groups require meal plans. For allergy questions, contact Schlessman Commons at 970-887-2152 extension 1701 rather than assuming a dish is allergen-free.
Buckboard Grill offers coffee, baked goods and plated food, but its current posted hours are 7:30–10am despite a broader breakfast/lunch/dinner description. Confirm which meals are operating. The seasonal Skinny Ski Cafe has described chili, soup, bagels, wraps and hot drinks at the Nordic Center, with an older winter opening notice; ask for the renewed schedule. Food purchases are separate from tree tickets and general activity access.
| Schlessman meal | Posted hours | Adult / child 6–12 price |
|---|---|---|
| Breakfast | 6:30–9am | $16.50 / $9 |
| Lunch | 11am–1pm | $19.50 / $11.50 |
| Dinner | 5–7:30pm | $22 / $16.50 |
Contacts, pets and practical boundaries
Call the ranch’s general number, 970-887-2152, for visitor questions; the Programs Department uses extension 4135 and the winter Nordic office lists 888-573-9622. Lodging reservations use 888-613-9622, while group reservations use 800-777-9622. These are Snow Mountain Ranch arrangements at County Road 53 in Granby, distinct from Estes Park Center.
Pets must be leashed, registered for lodging and kept out of enclosed public areas except the stated service-animal exception. They must be current on vaccinations, with documentation immediately available on request. Pet-friendly accommodation has its own nonrefundable fees: $25 per pet per night, up to two pets per unit, capped at $250 per stay and $500 per calendar year. Ask which accommodation and outdoor routes permit your pet rather than treating the dog park or Nordic pet trails as permission everywhere.
Professional or commercial photography requires prior written consent from the YMCA’s Marketing and Communications Department. Personal photography is prohibited in locker rooms, restrooms, changing rooms and childcare areas, and photos or video are not permitted inside the pool. Ask staff about any mobility or equipment needs for the specific activity: a general accessible label does not establish an accessible snowy tree-cutting route.
