Find your tree

Choose your Christmas tree.

Wilderwood’s main farm-grown tree is the Leyland cypress, which you choose and cut. The farm describes it as long-lasting, with soft, dark green foliage and shedless needles, and says that because it is not a pine or fir it has no sap or pollen, a point it makes for allergy and asthma sufferers.

The farm also sells pre-cut Fraser firs brought in from North Carolina farms, because they do not grow in Alabama, and keeps them in water. The farm describes the Fraser as having strong, slightly up-turned branches, blue-green foliage, a pleasant aroma and good needle retention. It publishes no tree sizes or prices.

Choose-and-cut Leyland cypress

Wilderwood is a family farm just west of Tuscaloosa that began as a mother-and-daughter dream, with a first test crop of about 100 Leyland cypress seedlings dug in by hand. Today you wander the field looking for that special tree and choose and cut your own fresh, farm-grown Leyland cypress.

Tree prices and sizes are not published; confirm at the farm. The farm also does not say whether it provides saws or cutting help, or whether it shakes, nets or loads trees, so ask when you arrive.

The gift shop

The gift shop is packed with ornaments, home decor, candles and treats, with a specialty in handcrafted items made at the farm or by local craftsmen. You can also pick up a dozen fresh farm eggs, subject to availability. The farm says the shop is open seasonally and publishes no shop hours or prices.

Students visit the Christmas tree field, help plant a baby Christmas tree and learn how live trees help the environment. The visit also includes a wagon ride, a visit with the farm animals (the flyer mentions visiting a sheep, brushing a miniature horse and feeding a chicken), hay bale hide and seek, a farm Christmas craft, the bouncy house, the play area and a picnic area.
