Find your tree

Choose your Christmas tree.

Fish River’s choose-and-cut trees are grown on the farm and range, in the farm’s words, from tabletop size to 12–13 feet. The five varieties named on the home, price-list and farm-grown pages are Virginia pine, Leyland cypress, Carolina Sapphire, Blue Ice and Murray cypress. The home page also names Clemson Greenspire and Portuguese cypress, and the price list also names Green Giant arborvitae, so ask which varieties are in the field on the day you visit.

Every tree is tagged with its size and price. The farm says tag prices vary with size and variety, but its current price list is a single height-based table for every choose-and-cut variety, so a 7-foot tree is $75 and an 8-foot tree is $89 on that list. The farm also sells container-grown living trees, shipped-in Fraser and Noble firs and flocked trees, covered in their own sections below.

Choose-and-cut trees and prices

The farm calls this its largest crop ever, in sizes from tabletop up to 12–13 feet. Walk the field, find the tree you like and read its tag, which shows the size and the price. The farm’s sample prices agree with the table: a 7-foot Virginia pine is $75, an 8-foot Leyland cypress is $89 and a 9-foot Murray cypress is $104.

The farm does not publish saw or cart arrangements, shaking, netting, loading help, drilling, tree stands, parking, restrooms, pet rules, weather rules or payment methods for the tree visit, so ask at the farm when you arrive.

Container-grown living trees

Fish River sells living Christmas trees grown in containers, in five varieties the farm says do well along the Gulf Coast, and says they will not drop needles if they are watered properly. They are shown in a special display area behind the sales building. You decorate the tree for the season and plant it afterward.

Prices are by pot size and height measured from the bottom of the pot to the top of the tree. The farm also offers planting services in the winter planting season at a reduced cost, and privacy-fence plantings, but only by quote; contact the farm for one. That is a landscaping service, separate from a tree visit.

Pre-cut Fraser and Noble firs

Firs do not grow in South Alabama, so the farm ships in what it calls the best firs it can find: Fraser and Noble from North Carolina, Michigan and Oregon, in sizes up to 12 feet. These are cut trees, not field-cut.

Flocked trees

The farm specializes in flocked trees up to 10 feet. To order, email the farm with your name, phone number, the type and height of tree and the day you want to pick it up, or choose a display tree, or choose a tree and come back for it later. The flocking takes 24–48 hours to dry, weather permitting.

The flocking charge is added to the tree’s price (the 6-foot row’s charge covers trees up to 6 feet), and flocking a wreath or cross adds $8. The farm’s flocking page also shows a worked example for a 7-foot fir; its fir price there is older than the current list, so use the table below.

Santa, the manger scene, the tree train and rides

On the weekends of November 21–22, November 27–29 and December 5–6, Santa is at the farm from 10am to 4pm each day, and the farm runs its Tannebaum Express tour, which it describes as a popular and free farm tour. The manger scene with live animals is there on every day the farm is open for tree sales.

Camel and pony rides are $10 for each ride on the same weekends. The farm publishes no age, weight or weather rule for the rides, no fee for Santa visits and no train times. The farm also takes Trees for Troops donations: $30 pays for a tree sent to a military family through the farm’s charity, by an online payment link.

The Cabins at Fish River Trees are a separate stay

On the same property the owners run rental cabins as a separate lodging business that welcomes guests throughout the year, not part of a tree visit. Each cabin sleeps up to six, with two bedrooms, a pull-out sofa and a kitchenette. Check-in is 3:00pm and check-out 10:00am, with a two-night minimum stay. The cabins’ rates are undated on its own site: $139 per night plus taxes, $834 per week plus taxes, with a one-night-free special, or $1,668 per month plus taxes with power, water, sewer, TV and internet included. Reserve through the cabins’ office at (251) 988-8114 or info@thecabinsatfishrivertrees.com.

The farm, getting there and contacts

The cabins’ site says the farm is owned and operated by Steve and Sandra Mannhard. The farm’s home page says it is celebrating 45 years; the cabins’ site gives an older, shorter figure of 36 years. It is in central Baldwin County, about five miles east of Fairhope. From Fairhope, take Baldwin County Highway 48 (Fairhope Avenue) east from Wingfingers for five miles and follow the signs. From Summerdale, take Baldwin County Highway 32 west from Highway 59 for five miles.

For tree farm questions and garland orders, call (251) 988-8114 or email fishrivertrees@gulftel.com. Flocked-tree orders go to the same email address with your name, phone number, tree type and height and pick-up date.
