Choose your Christmas tree.

Murphy’s offers two kinds of tree. Visitors pick out a Leyland cypress in the field, and the flyer prices it at $9 per foot in sizes 4 to 11 feet. The flyer also prices pre-cut Fraser fir by height from 6 to 10 feet; the farm last said it is sold only at the Bear Creek farm.

The farm’s most recent letter also named Carolina Sapphire among the trees available for selection. The current flyer names only Leyland cypress and Fraser fir, so ask whether Carolina Sapphire is in the field this season.

Picking out a cypress in the field

At Murphy’s you pick out your tree in the field. The farm’s posts invite visitors to come and “pick out your perfect Christmas tree”, and its letter speaks of choosing a tree and of the trees available for selection. The flyer prices Leyland cypress at $9 per foot in sizes 4 to 11 feet at both of the farm’s locations. The farm does not say how a tree’s height is measured, or describe how a chosen tree is taken from the field.

Fraser fir is a separate, pre-cut purchase, and wreaths, delivery and ordering are covered in their own sections below.

Cypress prices on the most recent price sheet

The farm’s most recent published price sheet lists Leyland cypress and Carolina Sapphire together on one tiered list. It is not this season’s list: the current flyer gives only the Leyland rate, and whether Carolina Sapphire is available this season is not confirmed. Use the tiers as a guide and confirm the price of the tree you choose with the farm.

The sheet’s 12-foot-and-taller tier is $120. The current flyer lists sizes up to 11 feet, so ask whether taller cypress is in the field.

Fraser fir: pre-cut, last named at the Bear Creek farm only

Fraser firs are pre-cut. In a post from the previous season the farm said Fraser firs are only at the Bear Creek farm on Mill Way; the current flyer names no location, so ask before driving to the Northport farm for one. The farm’s most recent letter says its Fraser firs are grown in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, freshly cut the Saturday before Thanksgiving and placed in water when they reach the farm. The same letter said the farm would have only forty-five 6 to 7 foot and fifty-five 7 to 8 foot Fraser firs for sale.

An October graphic from the farm says to place a Fraser fir order at christmastrees@att.net. The farm does not say whether Fraser firs can be bought without ordering ahead.

Opening day, hours and Santa

The flyer says the farm opens the day after Thanksgiving at 10am, which is Friday, November 27, and it gives one weekly schedule for both farms. “Dark” is the only closing time given, and no closing date for the season is published.

In its most recent published season the Bear Creek farm held a Santa visit on a Saturday in mid-December from 1:00pm to 3:00pm and stayed open from 10:00am to 4:00pm that day, while the Northport farm kept its regular hours. No Santa visit or special-hours date has been published for this season.

Delivery, wreaths and ordering

Wreath and delivery prices come from the farm’s most recent published price sheet, not from this season’s flyer, so confirm them with the farm. In its most recent letter the farm said deliveries begin at dark when the farms close for the day, and that you should say you want delivery when you place your order; otherwise it is understood that you will pick up your tree. The farm names no delivery area.

Orders go to christmastrees@att.net, which the flyer gives for placing orders. The farm does not say whether cypress can be ordered or reserved ahead.

The Northport farm

The farm’s second location is the Northport farm at 14442 Preacher Lee Road, Northport, AL 35475, on Highway 171, which the farm also calls the 171 farm. It shares the phone number, email address, price list, opening day and weekly hours with the Bear Creek farm, and the farm publishes no other directions.

The two farms differ in a few ways. The farm last said Fraser firs are only at the Bear Creek farm. The farm’s most recent letter gave the Northport farm’s cypress sizes as 4 to 12 feet against 4 to 9 feet at the Bear Creek farm; the current flyer gives 4 to 11 feet at both. No Santa visit or photography information is published for the Northport farm.

Safety, tree care and what the page does not state

A farm notice posted in November asks visitors to use caution on its tree farms: watch your step, watch your children and watch for others, and do not damage trees or other property. The farm also reminds customers to keep their tree watered.

A farm photo from the previous season shows a tree-netting machine and a portable toilet beside a barn; the farm does not say which farm, or whether netting is free. Its page does not describe saw or tool arrangements, tagging, shaking, baling, food or drink, a shop, group or school visits, pet rules or accessibility, so ask about those and about parking before you go.

Contacts and the farm’s Facebook page

The farm has no website and posts its flyers, price sheets and notices on its Facebook page. One phone number, one email address and one Facebook page serve both farms. Call 205-826-4231 for hours and availability, and use christmastrees@att.net for orders.
