Gilbert grows Murray and Leyland cypress, Carolina Sapphire, Virginia pine and Green Giant arborvitae. The farm says Murray and Leyland cypress together are its number one seller, followed by Virginia pine, then Carolina Sapphire and Green Giant. Trees are sold by the foot, except Virginia pine, which is priced by the field, and you can cut your tree or the farm will cut it for you.
Fraser firs are cut in North Carolina and brought to the farm two days before opening. The farm says its prices are the same as last year and that it is doing its part to keep real trees affordable. It does not describe tagging, saws or carts, so ask when you arrive.

You can cut your tree or the farm will cut it for you.
The farm does not say which Leyland price applies at which height, publishes no separate price for Murray cypress or Green Giant, and does not describe tagging, saws or carts, so confirm the price of the tree you choose before it is cut.

The trees, as the farm describes them
The farm’s tree guide describes each kind it grows. It says Murray cypress needs more frequent watering in a warm home and that Carolina Sapphire dries quickly, so plan to keep either well watered.
| Tree | What the farm says |
|---|---|
| Leyland and Murray cypress | Murray looks much like Leyland, with slightly darker green foliage and somewhat stronger branches; very little aroma; Murray needs more frequent watering in a warm home. Leyland is about 80 percent of the farm’s own tree sales |
| Carolina Sapphire | A cultivar of Arizona cypress with blue to gray-blue foliage and upright branches; the scent is described as citrusy or minty; dries quickly in a warm home |
| Virginia pine | Stout, woody branches that support heavier ornaments; a rich piney fragrance; good needle retention when watered regularly |
| Green Giant arborvitae | A fast-growing evergreen with feathery green foliage; a new variety being added at Southern Christmas tree farms |
| Fraser fir | Blue-green needles with silvery undersides, stiff branches that hold ornaments, a pleasant scent and excellent needle retention |
Fresh-cut Fraser fir kept in water
The farm brings in cut Fraser firs from North Carolina, from Scaly Mountain, and says they are priced from $108 to $325 for trees of 7 to 12 feet. The trees arrive two days before the farm opens and are processed the next day: the base is cut, the low branches are trimmed and the trunk is drilled, and the trees are displayed in water. The storage area is covered and the trees are stored in water, never dry, until you take one home. The farm’s Facebook page says Fraser firs will be there on opening day.
The farm advises keeping a fresh-cut tree watered daily. Fraser fir is pre-cut and separate from the choose-and-cut field.

Two entrances and driving directions
The farm covers 227 acres in the country where, as it puts it, the only neighbors are turkey and deer, and it has two entrances. The County Road 296 entrance, at 1230 County Road 296, is a one-lane gravel road built on an old railroad bed, so expect to pull over for oncoming cars; it is 3 miles closer to West Point and the Valley area. The County Road 266 entrance, at 2118 County Road 266, is wider and allows two-way traffic. From either, follow the gravel road to the trees and the signs.
From Lanett, Valley and West Point, go north on the state line road (County Road 212) past the West Point Dam to the farm’s sign and turn left on County Road 296; the gate is four-tenths of a mile on the right. From I-85 exit 79, go north on US 29 about 10 miles; it becomes 3rd Avenue in West Point, then Georgia Stateline Road, then County Road 212, and you turn on 296 at mile marker 5. From LaFayette, Five Points and Roanoke, turn off Highway 431 at Five Points onto County Road 222, then right on County Road 266; the farm is seven-tenths of a mile on the left. From LaGrange, go west on the Roanoke–LaGrange Road, which becomes AL 278 in Alabama, turn left on County Road 266, go about 5 miles across County Road 222 where 266 turns to dirt and continue seven-tenths of a mile to 2118 on the left.
The family and the farm, and how to reach it
Gilbert is a family farm that planted Virginia pines first, added Leyland cypress later, and began bringing in Fraser fir to give customers a wider variety of fresh trees. The farm was established in 1983 and sold its first trees in 1988. The family is a member of the Southern Christmas Tree Association and the Georgia Christmas Tree Association.
