Choose your Christmas tree.
Cooks’ Woods pairs choose-and-cut hillsides with pre-cut trees in the barn’s upper level. Species and heights vary: Balsam and Concolor fir are listed at 5–8 feet, Canaan at 5–7 feet, Fraser at 5–6 feet, and Scotch and White pine at 5–8 feet. Available heights can decrease as the season progresses.
Balsam offers a strong traditional fragrance, Concolor a citrus-like scent and Fraser firm branches for heavier decorations. White pine’s softer branches suit lightweight ornaments. Staff can help compare the trees and supplies, including stands in several sizes.

Cutting, hauling and loading
Freshly sharpened hand saws are supplied; gas and battery chainsaws stay out of the fields. Shaking and baling are free, as is twine for securing the tree. Staff can help fasten it if needed, and farm transport can help bring a tree back from the fields.
Cut close to the ground rather than cutting the top off a tall tree. Staff can trim the trunk or lower branches afterward. Call ahead if you need cutting assistance; for a large tree, a truck or trailer is recommended rather than relying on a car roof.
Greenery and a warm break
Wreaths and fresh greenery are made on the farm from fresh-cut boughs. Traditional red decorations sit alongside other colors, and the range includes door swags, monument sprays, crosses, porch pots and wood-box centerpieces. Select from available stock during tree-selling season; the farm no longer takes greenery orders. Browse the greenery barn and maple syrup, and enjoy complimentary coffee and cocoa on weekends.
Cash, checks and Visa, MasterCard and Discover are accepted. Leashed dogs are welcome if you clean up after them. A pre-season visit to flag a tree is by appointment, and a flag does not guarantee the tree will remain uncut. Photography sessions are arranged individually before retail opening.
Make a wreath in a small workshop
Four two-hour wreathmaking sessions are offered in the wreath shop at 2176 Ebenezer Road. Each costs $55 per person and takes up to 10 participants, with first-come registration through Barbara Cook at barb@cookswoods.biz or 608-778-6084.
The fee includes a 10-inch double-rail wreath ring, usually making an 18–20-inch finished wreath, boughs, paddle wire, disposable gloves and a choice of decorations. Participants use pruners and glue pots and receive instruction in tying boughs and bows. This is a separately booked workshop, rather than an activity included with a tree.
