Find your tree
Choose your Christmas tree.
Mountains Edge is a choose-and-cut farm where you walk through the trees, pick the one that speaks to you, cut it down and bring it back for the family to bind. On arrival, check in with the family when you arrive; they can show you samples of each variety and send you in the right direction.
The farm grows two firs and two spruces, and every tree carries the same price whatever the variety or size. The spruces are treated in the field with florist wax for better needle retention.
Everything you need is lent at no charge: tree sleds, saws and gloves. If you would rather not cut or carry, the farm’s helpers can cut and haul the tree for you at no additional fee. Dress warm: the farm asks visitors to be prepared to be outside the entire time.

Four varieties, in the farm’s words
The farm describes each variety by needle length, colour and needle retention, rating retention with stars.
| Variety | What the farm says |
|---|---|
| Concolor fir | Blue-green needles, ½ to 1½ inches long, with a citrus aroma. Excellent needle retention. |
| Turkish or silver fir | Dark green needles with silver tips, ½ to 1 inch long; similar to Fraser fir. Excellent needle retention. |
| Blue spruce | Blue-green to powdery blue needles, ½ to 1 inch long. Good needle retention. |
| Norway spruce | Deep green needles, ½ to ¾ inch. Good needle retention. |
Early tagging, stands and wreaths
Early tagging is available on Sunday, November 15 and Sunday, November 22, from 1pm to 5pm. The farm does not explain how tagging works in its season announcement; last season the farm asked customers with a tagged tree still to collect to text their details so it could call to arrange a pickup appointment.
Davis tree stands and pin-style stands are sold at the farm, which describes them as easy-to-use stands that do not fail. Fresh-made wreaths are sold for front doors and as gifts. Prices for stands and wreaths are not posted.
Caring for your tree at home
If you will not set the tree up right away, store it in an unheated garage or other spot out of the wind and freezing temperatures. When you are ready, make a fresh half-inch cut and use a sturdy stand that holds at least half a gallon of water. Keep the water above the base of the trunk, because resin forms if it drops below.
Check lights for worn cords, use UL-approved decorations, and unplug the lights at night. Miniature lights reduce drying.
Finding the farm and a request to photographers
From Waynesboro, Pennsylvania, take Pennsylvania Route 997 south to Maryland Route 64, turn left on Bikle Road, turn right on Greensburg Road and continue to Edgemont Road. From Hagerstown, take Maryland Route 64 east, turn right on Bikle Road, turn right on Greensburg Road and continue to Edgemont Road. From there follow the signs and arrows to the farm. The farm’s own pages spell the road as Greensburg in one set of directions and Greensboro in another, so check a map for the turn.
The farm says photographers cannot be accommodated, and asks visitors to come enjoy its view. The Smithsburg mailing address sits outside the town itself, in the countryside of Washington County.
