Choose your Christmas tree.
Greenway Farms grows its trees at two choose-and-cut fields, one at Woodbine and one at Cooksville, both in western Howard County near the Route 97 and Route 144 intersection and convenient to I-70. The farm describes a great selection of Canaan fir and Fraser fir from 5 to 9 feet tall, and every choose-and-cut tree carries one flat price.
The farm’s tree-choosing page describes Canaan fir. It calls it a newcomer to the Christmas tree market, with many similarities to both Fraser and balsam firs in appearance and overall appeal, so it is a reasonable choice if you are comparing a familiar Fraser with something new. On Facebook the farm describes Canaan firs as holding on to their needles with a rich, traditional evergreen scent, and Fraser firs as famous for strong branches, which suits a family with many cherished ornaments.
Saws and twine are free, and the $105 price includes shaking and baling, with netting wrapped around the tree. Drilling is available for pole- or spike-type tree stands. Leashed dogs are welcome, heated restrooms are listed, and the farm takes cash, checks and credit cards.

Woodbine and Cooksville: choosing a field
The two fields have different hours, so pick the one that suits your day. The Woodbine field is open every day with a later weekday start, while Cooksville is open on weekends only and closes half an hour earlier. Both are closed on Thanksgiving Day and open on Black Friday.
| Field | Hours and how to get there |
|---|---|
| Woodbine field, 15105 Frederick Road | Weekdays 11am–5pm, weekends 9am–5pm. From Baltimore or Columbia, take I-70 West to exit 76 toward Olney, turn left on Route 97 south for about a mile to Route 144, and turn right at the light; the farm is about a mile down on the left. From Washington or Montgomery County, take Route 97 North to Route 144, turn left at the signal, and look for the signs about two miles along on the left. |
| Cooksville field, 14098 Reps Road | Weekends 9am–4:30pm. From Montgomery County, take Route 97 North through the Route 144 intersection for about a mile to Monticello Drive on the right, then about a mile to Reps Road on the left. From Baltimore or Columbia, take I-70 West to exit 76, turn right on Route 97 north and then immediately right on Monticello Drive, continuing a mile to Reps Road on the left. Reps Road is a gravel farm lane, and the farm is at the end of it. |
Wreaths, roping, honey and weekend food
Beyond the trees, Greenway offers wreaths, roping and other greens, along with crafts. Prices are not posted online. Local honey and hot drinks are sold, and CJ’s Pit Beef is on site on weekends. The farm does not say which field hosts the food vendor or the shop items, so ask when you phone about hours.
Poinsettias are grown in the family’s own greenhouses, in red, purple, ivory and marbled varieties, with larger planters filled with poinsettias in assorted colors and sizes. They are a holiday product separate from the tree purchase, and prices are not posted.
Taking the tree home and caring for it
Leave the net on the tree until it is in its stand. Most varieties can go an hour or two after cutting, but get the tree into water as soon as you can, or keep the trunk in a bucket of water if you are not setting it up right away.
Make a fresh cut of an inch or two off the trunk before it goes in the stand, and check the water daily.
A family farm in Howard County
The Healey family has farmed in Howard County since the early 1970s, and its tree growing began in that decade. The Christmas-tree fields cover close to 20 acres. Greenway is also a member of the Maryland Greenhouse Growers Association, the Maryland Nursery and Landscape Association and the Maryland Christmas Tree Growers Association.
The family’s separate greenhouse business at Cooksville grows flowers, herbs and vegetable plants for spring retail, wholesale bedding plants and school, church and scout fundraisers. That business runs in spring under its own hours and is separate from the Christmas visit.
