Find your tree

Choose your Christmas tree.

Frostee is a cut-your-own farm. Bring your own saw or use one of the farm’s, and on request the farm will haul your tree from the field. Twine is available to tie the tree on your vehicle, baling is available at no additional charge, and tree drilling and shaking are available too.

The farm’s own site does not list species, sizes or prices. The farm’s listing on a regional farm directory gives cut-your-own Douglas fir 5 to 12 feet, blue spruce 4 to 10 feet, Norway spruce 4 to 8 feet and white pine 5 to 15 feet, and local press describes trees of roughly 5 to 10 feet on its 15 acres. Treat those as a guide to the mix rather than a stock list, and ask on arrival which sizes remain.

The farm says it is open 8am until dusk “depending on availability.” Stock has run out early in some seasons, so a visit soon after the season opens gives the widest choice.

What the farm provides in the field

The farm’s home page lists the tools and services that surround a cut-your-own visit. Only baling is stated as free; the farm does not say whether drilling and shaking carry a charge, so ask before you cut.

Potted, bagged and landscape trees

Outside the Christmas-tree season Frostee sells potted trees year-round, and its home page promotes bagged trees for transplanting. Press coverage has described potted white pine, Norway spruce, green giants, white oak and burr oak, and trees grown directly in the bag that are easier to carry and later transplant.

These plants, together with other trees, shrubs and landscaping plants, follow their own hours: Monday through Friday from 9am to 4pm, with weekend visits by appointment only. Prices for potted and bagged trees are not posted.

A farm planted in the 1970s

George and Helen Winter began planting seedlings here in the 1970s and opened the farm to the public for choose-and-cut sales in the early 1980s. The name came from the Winters’ ice cream and snowball trucks, and Paul Stiffler, a long-time family friend, now runs the farm full-time.

The farm describes 15 acres of ready-to-cut Christmas trees; Maryland’s Best, the state producer program, lists 20 acres.

Photography sessions on the farm

Frostee runs a separate photography program for professional photographers. According to the farm’s permission slip, a photographer pays a yearly photography fee of $125.00, and the farm’s payment page pairs a $125.00 online checkout with that slip. Sessions must be scheduled before the Friday after Thanksgiving, because choose-and-cut tree sales start then and the two activities at once inconvenience the tree customers.

The slip asks photographers to list prospective session dates and rain dates, with their signature, email and phone, and to say how many people will attend. It names Paul Stiffler (410-913-9452) and Nadia (410-710-7837) as contacts, and Paul’s email is Paul@frosteetreefarm.com. This program is separate from an ordinary tree visit.

Finding Cowenton Avenue

Frostee is about a mile from the northeast side of White Marsh Mall. From U.S. 40, take Ebenezer Road about a quarter mile; it becomes Cowenton Avenue, and the farm’s sign is on the left. The farm’s home page links to turn-by-turn directions.
