Cawley Farms is a choose-and-cut farm on 15 acres, with a pre-cut Fraser fir section that supplements the field. Customers cut with the farm’s saws, and staff will help harvest the tree if you ask. The farm lists this season’s inventory on its home page: Canaan fir up to 13 feet, Douglas fir up to 8 feet, white pine up to 7 feet, a very limited supply of blue spruce, and a limited lot of concolor fir at 4 to 6 feet. Fraser fir is pre-cut only, at 6 to 8 feet. No Norway spruce is available this season.

Pre-cut Fraser firs are brought in from North Carolina or Pennsylvania. Each tree gets a fresh cut and stands in water on pin stands in troughs inside a 50-by-80-foot shed that holds about 100 trees, so the display stays dry and sheltered.

Look for the red tags: Douglas fir and Canaan fir in a marked clearing area are half off, though the farm does not say what the discount is taken from.

Saws, help cutting and tying on

Hand saws are on site for customers to use, and the farm’s answer to whether staff cut trees is yes: if you need help harvesting your tree, just ask. The Maryland Christmas Tree Association also lists carts. Shaking, baling and netting are included in the price. Drilling for pin stands is done on request, and the farm will tie the tree on your vehicle if you ask; the vehicle’s owner accepts responsibility for the tree on the car.

The farm has a restroom. The farm does not sell hot chocolate. Leashed dogs may come, though the farm keeps its own dogs and suggests leaving pets at home for safety.

Wreaths made fresh daily, plus online orders

Wreaths are made fresh daily from greens grown on the farm, plain or decorated, and the farm says they last until Easter. Custom horse heads, crosses, window swags and grave blankets are made too. You can stop by and buy one, or order online for pickup: the order form’s earliest pickup date is November 11, payment is due at pickup, materials are subject to availability, prices are subject to change, and the farm contacts you before filling the order.

Finished wreath sizes on the order form run from 8 to 30 inches; the farm’s other pages give a different size range, so use the order form’s sizes and prices. A bow adds $5, placed top middle, bottom middle, left side, right side or at the designer’s choice, or left off.

Design choices, garland, bows and ornaments

The wreath form offers designs: natural, with pine cones, berries and a burlap bow; cemetery, with a red bow only; Christmas bulbs; a crab wreath with a crab shell; a fishing wreath with bobbers; a ravens wreath with purple and gold bulbs; a snowy wreath with snowflakes, sprayed snow and a snowman; or a custom design where you choose items such as pine cones, holly, berries, bulbs, Santa, a snowman or a cardinal and set an ornament budget.

Fresh garland comes in 25-foot and 50-foot strands from a local nursery, mostly white pine with other greens, and can be cut to length. Handmade wired-ribbon bows can be reshaped. The farm also makes pin stands from welded steel rebar, in three-legged and four-legged styles; the tree must be drilled before you leave, and the farm will replace a stand or refund it if you bring it back. Prolong Tree Preserve is sold for trees that will stay up more than three weeks. Wood-burned ornaments, made by the owner’s daughter from leftover trunks, can carry names and dates on request. Prices for garland, stand-alone bows, stands, Prolong and ornaments are not posted.

The farm also sells hand-made blankets and towels along with its ornaments and tree accessories.

Payment, photography and the farm itself

The farm accepts Visa, Mastercard, Discover, American Express and Apple Pay, plus cash and checks. It does not allow professional photographers, but families are welcome to take as many photos as they wish of their visit.

The Cawley family has run the farm since the 1990s, beginning with the trees and equipment of an existing tree lot and then planting its own Douglas fir, white pine, Norway spruce and Colorado blue spruce, with Canaan and concolor fir added later. The farm is inspected by the Maryland Department of Agriculture and belongs to the Maryland Christmas Tree Association.
