Choose your Christmas tree.
Herrick’s field-cutting season is for previously tagged trees only. Public tagging begins October 1; volunteers who help plant and run the farm have earlier access, and other tags placed early may be removed. Use the farm’s tear-off tag, write your name and telephone number on the tree’s part, and retain the matching section for collection. Most field trees above 6 feet are concolor, with only a small number of spruce and Fraser.
For a ready-cut alternative, the farm brings in balsam and Fraser firs from Vermont and Canada. A separate tall-tree program brings in limited 9–14-foot Vermont-grown trees; reserve through the tall-tree page, or ask about availability before travelling. These are distinct from the smaller locally grown tagged field trees.

Cutting, payment and the trip home
Trees are listed at $100–$175. Cash, checks, Venmo and credit cards are accepted. Staff can cut and bale your tree at no additional charge and help tie it to the car. Handsaws are supplied; your own handsaw or electric chainsaw is allowed, while gas-powered saws are prohibited.
Bring rope, bungees or straps for securing the tree, along with sturdy footwear for snow or mud. Friendly pets need a leash and waste bags. A portable toilet is provided.
Forest walks and photography
The surrounding Mary A. Herrick Memorial Forest has trails for passive recreation, including the High Ridge Trail connection. Professional photography requires a separate photography permit; buying a tree is not a photography booking.
Comparing firs and reserving a tall tree
For a different look and scent, Herrick describes concolor fir with longer silvery blue-green needles and a citrus fragrance, Fraser with shorter dark-green needles and a symmetrical shape, and precut balsam with a strong traditional fir fragrance. Compare the actual trees available: those descriptions do not expand the limited field crop.
The 9–14-foot trees come from the farm’s Vermont growing partner. Boxford-grown trees rarely remain untagged beyond 8 feet. Use the tall-tree request form in advance, or check inventory before travelling for that height; a request is separate from reserving a tagged field tree.
