Choose your Christmas tree.
SJMA’s Trees for Conservation lot offers two different tree stories. Local white firs are wild-grown in the San Juan National Forest and harvested by volunteers from areas identified for thinning. Farmed balsam firs come from Wisconsin, with a more cultivated shape. Compare the individual trees at the lot rather than expecting identical outlines.
The white fir harvest supports forest-health work by removing young trees that can act as ladder fuel, helping fire move from the underbrush into taller crowns. Tree-purchase proceeds support public-land stewardship and conservation education. This is a staffed retail fundraiser, not a public self-cut outing.
The visitor lot is at Camino del Rio and College Avenue in the Durango & Silverton train parking lot. SJMA’s Burnett Court office and mailing address are separate contacts, so use the lot location for tree shopping.

Gifts alongside the trees
SJMA adds a pop-up shop with stocking stuffers and gifts for family members. It lets the tree purchase support the nonprofit’s conservation work while also taking care of a small holiday gift.
The selling schedule runs from the day after Thanksgiving to December 18, with an earlier finish if stock sells out. Saturday opens in the morning; Sunday through Friday begin at noon. Check availability before traveling near the end of the program.

More experiences: volunteer with the program
Individuals, service groups and social organizations can ask about helping harvest, set up the lot or sell trees. SJMA describes three-hour selling shifts as one way to contribute time to the fundraiser. These are volunteer arrangements, separate from an ordinary shopping visit.
